Denise Hien, Ph.D.

Dr. Hien is the Executive Director of the Women's Health Project Treatment and Research Center, overseeing all of its research and treatment services and mentoring the professional staff, doctoral, and post-doctoral trainees. Dr. Hien is nationally recognized for her studies of women, violence, and substance abuse. She is the recipient of numerous research grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) for her work on the predictors of -- and treatments for -- interpersonal violence, substance use disorders, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among urban women. Her articles have appeared in peer-reviewed medical journals and books. Through Dr. Hien's leadership, the Women's Health Project has received numerous research grants from (NIDA), (NIAAA) and Office of Research on Women's Health, and has sponsored many pre and postdoctoral training awards. Dr. Hien is a Research Scholar at Columbia University at the School of Social Work, Social Intervention Group and Supervising Psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center. She also maintains a private practice on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Dr. Hien completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Feminist Literature at Cornell University in 1984, and received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University in 1992. She completed her Internship Training in Child Psychology at Roosevelt Hospital and a Post Doctoral Fellowship in the Division of Substance Abuse at The New York State Psychiatric Institute, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Lisa Litt, Ph.D.

Dr. Litt is the Clinical Director of the Women's Health Project Treatment and Research Center, overseeing the clinical services and professional training offered by the program. Previously Dr. Litt was the Program Director of a WHP psychotherapy outcome study funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse entitled, "PTSD Treatment Outcomes for Cocaine Dependent Women." Dr. Litt was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Group Psychotherapy at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center. She is an Adjunct Professor of Psychology and Education at Columbia University Teachers College and Instructor in Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Litt has expertise working with individuals traumatized in childhood or adulthood and is trained in several methods developed specifically for the treatment of trauma, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. She is also experienced using integrated models of treatment for mental health and substance use issues. Her private practice is in New York City. Sharon Sageman, M.D.

Dr. Sageman is the Medical Director of the Women's Health Project and is board certified in adult psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and geriatric psychiatry as well as being certified in holistic medicine by the American Board of Holistic Medicine. Lisa R. Cohen, Ph.D.

Dr. Cohen is the Research Program Director of the Women's Health Project, overseeing the development and ongoing activities of projects in the WHP research program. She is also a clinical supervisor for externs in the WHP program. Dr. Cohen received clinical and research training at Yale University and Cornell University Medical College. She is a licensed clinical psychologist who has participated in and coordinated a variety of NIMH-funded treatment trials (e.g. PTSD, binge eating disorder, depression and anxiety disorders). She has expertise working with women who have PTSD related to chronic abuse beginning in childhood and is a co-author of a treatment manual for this population ("Treating Survivors of Childhood Abuse").
Dr. Cohen has a private practice based in New York City. She is trained in exposure therapy for trauma related disorders as well as cognitive-behavioral and interpersonal psychotherapy for anxiety, depression and eating disorders.

Aimee Campbell, MSW,

Ms. Campbell is part of the research staff at WHP and the Project Director for a NIDA Clinical Trials Network funded national multi-site study testing two interventions for women with co-morbid substance dependence and PTSD. Ms. Campbell received a M.S. in Social work from Columbia University in 2003 and has been involved in intervention research since 1995. She has extensive experience on protocols testing HIV prevention interventions, motivational enhancement therapies, including a role as a counselor on a pilot study with marijuana dependent adolescents and as a project coordinator on a NIDA funded brief intervention for marijuana dependent adults. She is lead author on a recruitment outcomes paper and has co-authored several papers dealing with gender specific issues, including trauma, addiction and sex work. Andrea Johnson, LCSW

Ms. Johnson is currently the Social Work Supervisor at the Women's Health Project. I previously worked as the Senior Social Worker at the Community Counseling and Mediation Mental Health and Substance Abuse Clinics practicing individual and family therapy to children, adolscents and adults. Prior to this I worked as a Social Worker at Long Island College Hospital Rape Crisis Intervention/Victims of Violence Program practicing individual and group therapy to survivors of rape, incest, and domestic violence. I also worked in the hospital's Emergency Department providing crisis intervention and advocacy to survivors of rape and domestic violence.
